Calcium & Magnesium: The Bone-Building Duo
Why these minerals work better together for optimal bone health.
Pharmacist's Note
Information below supports education and safer decision-making but does not replace one-on-one clinical advice.
Strong bones are built over a lifetime, and two minerals do much of the heavy lifting: calcium and magnesium. Calcium gives bone its strength and rigidity, while magnesium helps regulate calcium transport and activates the vitamin D your bones depend on. They also work together in muscle contraction and nerve signalling.
How much calcium do you need?
Requirements change with age and life stage. Most adults need around 1000 mg of calcium daily, rising to about 1200 mg for women over 50 and adults over 70. Dairy products, small fish eaten with bones (like omena), dark leafy greens such as sukuma wiki, and fortified foods all count toward your total. Supplements only need to cover what your diet does not.
Getting the most from your supplement
The body absorbs calcium best in doses of 500 mg or less, so split larger amounts across the day. Calcium carbonate should be taken with meals, while calcium citrate can be taken any time. Magnesium taken in the evening may also support muscle relaxation and sleep quality. Pair both with adequate vitamin D for proper absorption.
Who should take extra care
People with kidney disease or a history of kidney stones should seek medical advice before supplementing, and calcium can interfere with some antibiotics, thyroid medicines, and iron if taken at the same time.
