Coenzyme Q10: Heart & Energy Support
Understanding CoQ10's role in cellular energy and cardiovascular health.
Pharmacist's Note
Information below supports education and safer decision-making but does not replace one-on-one clinical advice.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like compound found in nearly every cell of your body, where it helps mitochondria — the cell's power stations — produce energy. It also acts as an antioxidant. The body makes its own CoQ10, but levels decline naturally with age and can be lowered by some medicines.
CoQ10 and statins
Cholesterol-lowering statins reduce the body's CoQ10 production, and some patients who experience muscle aches on statins discuss CoQ10 supplementation with their clinician. Evidence is mixed, but the supplement is generally well tolerated. Never stop or adjust a statin on your own — talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
Other uses being studied
Research continues into CoQ10 for heart failure support, blood pressure, migraine prevention, and age-related fatigue. Results are promising in some areas but not conclusive, so treat CoQ10 as a complement to — never a replacement for — prescribed cardiac treatment.
Choosing and taking CoQ10
CoQ10 is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal containing some fat. The ubiquinol form is better absorbed by older adults. Product quality varies widely, so choose trusted brands with clear labelling. CoQ10 may interact with warfarin and blood-pressure medicines.
