Folic Acid: Essential for Pregnancy

Why folic acid is crucial for pregnant women and fetal development.

Pharmacist's Note

Information below supports education and safer decision-making but does not replace one-on-one clinical advice.

Few supplements have evidence as strong as folic acid in pregnancy. Taken before conception and through early pregnancy, it dramatically reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida — serious conditions affecting the baby's brain and spinal cord.

Why timing is everything

The neural tube forms within the first 28 days of pregnancy — often before a woman knows she is pregnant. That is why guidelines recommend that every woman planning pregnancy, or who could become pregnant, takes 400-800 mcg of folic acid daily rather than waiting for a positive test. Women with a previous neural-tube-defect pregnancy, diabetes, or on certain epilepsy medicines may be prescribed higher doses by their clinician.

Beyond pregnancy

Folate also supports normal red blood cell formation and works alongside vitamin B12 — deficiency of either can cause anaemia. Good food sources include dark leafy greens like spinach and sukuma wiki, beans, lentils, groundnuts, and fortified flour, though cooking destroys some folate, which is why a supplement remains important when planning a family.
