Multivitamins: Filling Nutritional Gaps

When and why you might need a multivitamin supplement.

Pharmacist's Note

Information below supports education and safer decision-making but does not replace one-on-one clinical advice.

A balanced diet built on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein remains the foundation of good nutrition — no tablet replaces real food. But real life is not always balanced. Busy schedules, tight budgets, restricted diets, and certain life stages can leave genuine nutritional gaps that a well-chosen multivitamin can help fill.

Who benefits most from a multivitamin

Older adults often absorb less vitamin B12 and vitamin D from food. Vegetarians and vegans may run low on B12, iron, and zinc. People recovering from illness, those on weight-loss diets, heavy alcohol users, and pregnant or breastfeeding women (with medical guidance) also have raised needs. If you regularly skip meals or eat the same narrow menu daily, a multivitamin can act as sensible insurance.

How to choose well

Buy from reputable manufacturers and check that amounts sit near 100% of the recommended daily value rather than extreme megadoses — more is not better, and very high doses of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can accumulate to harmful levels. Choose an age-and-sex-appropriate formula: men and post-menopausal women generally need little or no added iron.

Avoiding interactions

Multivitamins can interfere with some prescription medicines — for example, minerals can reduce absorption of certain antibiotics and thyroid medication when taken together.

Bring your current medicines to Sadima Pharmacy and our pharmacist will check for interactions and help you pick a multivitamin that actually matches your needs.

Safety Reminder

Always check for interactions with your current medication and underlying conditions before starting a new supplement. Visit or message Sadima Pharmacy for personalized guidance.
