Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin
Learn about the importance of Vitamin D for bone health, immunity, and overall wellness.

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for lifelong health, yet deficiency is more common than many people expect — even in a sunny country like Kenya. It is essential for calcium absorption and bone strength, and it also plays a crucial role in immune function, muscle performance, and mood regulation.
Why sunshine alone may not be enough
Your skin makes Vitamin D when exposed to direct sunlight. In practice, though, many of us spend the day indoors at work or school, cover most of our skin, or apply sunscreen — all of which reduce Vitamin D production. Darker skin tones also need longer sun exposure to make the same amount of Vitamin D. That is why office workers, night-shift workers, the elderly, and people who are mostly indoors are at higher risk of deficiency.
Signs of low Vitamin D
Deficiency often develops silently, but common signs include persistent fatigue, bone and lower-back pain, frequent infections, slow wound healing, muscle aches, and low mood. In children, severe deficiency can cause rickets — soft, weakened bones. A simple blood test ordered by your clinician can confirm your Vitamin D level before you start supplementing.
How much do you need?
Most adults need around 600-800 IU daily from food and supplements combined, though people with confirmed deficiency are often prescribed higher corrective doses for a limited period. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so it is best taken with a meal that contains some fat. Avoid prolonged megadoses unless a clinician is monitoring you, as excess Vitamin D can build up in the body.
